Salaries
As an approximate indication, entry-level offshore jobs such
as Roughneck
or Roustabout
salaries start from $50,000 US p.a. People who work in
trade, professional or technical positions, tend to earn
upwards of $70,000 US, with salaries of over $200,000 US
p.a. not uncommon.
Offshore jobs benefits
Benefits provided by companies involved in the offshore
industry range from virtually nonexistent to excellent. The
better companies will provide major medical insurance, dental
insurance, life insurance, 401 K programs and profit
sharing.
Your health
The main requirement for working offshore is that you be in
sound physical condition. You will be required to pass a
thorough physical examination, including a spinal X- ray.
Answer all questions truthfully. You will also be given a drug
screening.
Your age
You must be at least 18 to do offshore jobs. The average age
for oilrig workers is 27.
Your experience
The better your experience in your field or profession, the
closer prospective employers will look you at. If you do not
have any skill or experience that relates to the offshore jobs,
it does not mean you will not be hired.
There are many entry-level offshore jobs available, which
require no previous offshore experience. The most important
thing is honesty. Be straight with your experience and your
skills.
Your educationThe majority of
entry-level offshore jobs do not require a formal
education as the employer is more interested in your
ability to do your job well and learn quickly. However,
completion of secondary school or petroleum
industry courses may be required. Some offshore
jobs, such as a ballast controlman require at least
a high school education. Other positions, as they get
more complex naturally require higher levels of
education.
Dependability
One of the foremost concerns of offshore oilrig employers is
dependability. Regardless of how good you are, you are not much
good if you are not there! One of the quickest ways to lose
your job is not to show up for crew change.
Advancement and training
Offshore jobs are very interesting. Advancement offshore
will depend primarily on the company you work for and your
particular abilities. All companies want you to advance. They
want you to become better trained so you can do more and take a
more responsible position.
Interest in training and learning your job and others sparks
ambition. Once you get in and get some basic training and
experience you can move into many different areas involved in
all phases of the offshore oil industry.
The more courses you complete, the better chances for
advancement and more credentials you have when you shop for
another offshore jobs.
Travel experiences
In the offshore industries, many travel opportunities exist
as part of the job. You may find yourself posted to such
countries as Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Russia, the UK or Indonesia.
Working in other countries than the US or Canada can be more
rewarding. These offshore jobs may have larger security risks
which results with a larger pay.
